Shukran Allah is a timeless romantic ballad that is created with a combination of simplicity, soul, and subtle musicality. The composition is the brainchild of none other than Shankar-Eshaan-Loy, and it effortlessly weaves together elegant instrumentation with heartfelt lyrics.

This song isn’t flashy, and neither is it complex, but it’s the song you need to learn if you wish to understand how a melody is controlled on guitar and how you are able to express emotions with it. The song is built on a simple yet effective chord progression, which is rooted in C major or D major, making it a beginner-friendly guitar song to learn.

The gentle acoustic guitar elements in the original recording of the song translate wonderfully when you play this song solo. One of the biggest lessons you will have from this song is developing musical sensitivity.

Strumming Pattern

The tonality of the song is gentle, so it requires a light and flowing strumming pattern that compliments its romantic and airy vibe; here is the required pattern that would be best for beginners: D – D U – U D U.

• D = Down Strum.
• U = Up Strum.

When you are practicing this song, make sure you emphasize the second downstroke in order to create a gentle, rhythmic pulse. During the verse section of the song, play the strumming pattern as lightly as possible, or you can even make a switch to fingerpicking for an intimate feel.

There is an optional strumming pattern that you can follow: D – x U – U D U.

Here, X is a soft, muted strum; this adds a whole new sound texture to your strumming.

Welcome to the guitar lesson on a heart-melting indie song called Alag Aasmaan. Written and performed by Anuv Jain, a master storyteller of the romantic variety who has a reputation for being celebrated all over the country by everyone who has or wants a broken heart.

Alag Aasman is about the suffering of lovers in a long-distance relationship. The artist says, “It is a rarity to meet each other in a long-distance relationship, and when you finally do, the goodbyes can get pretty difficult. There's so much uncertainty, and you do not know when you'll meet again”. Alag Aasmaan translates to ‘different sky’, signalling to the narrative that the lovers in different cities live under different skies.

The original version of the song was performed on a ukulele, recorded and uploaded on YouTube during the pandemic, the looming emotions of which complemented the sentiment of the song, that is about missing a loved one.

Alag Aasmaan Guitar Lesson

The instructor delivers the lesson in a section-by-section manner; the first section gives the introduction to the song, the second talks about chords and rhythm patterns, the third is about the arrangement, which is finally followed by a solo section.

Alag Aasmaan guitar chords are in the key of F# Major, but the open position sounds too bright for the subtle lightness of the song; hence, a capo at fret 6 is advised by the instructor to emphasise the soft twinkly quality of the sound on the higher frets. The capo here also transposes the chord shapes to the standard and more familiar ones – C, F, G, Am, and Em.

The rhythm of the song resembles that of a jazz classic, as made clear by the strumming pattern that goes like D - U - D D - U in a loop. (D is a downward strum, and U is an upward strum.)

The tutor explains how the song has four verses, a pre-bridge, a bridge, and an outro solo that constitute the arrangement of the track. At two moments in the song, the second and fourth verse, this arrangement offers a chord change to the major 6th interval of the scale –from G to Em (C# to A#m without capo) that lends itself to the tender and affectionate feel of the story that the song is telling. The outro solo is picked slowly in the style of bluegrass music and is played in the context of this major 6th tone on top of the same chords as verses two and four. The instructor shows the solo note by note, and since the original solo is only 30 seconds long, in the final section of the lesson, there is a demonstration on how to improvise over it for when you are jamming by yourself.

Welcome to the guitar lesson on a song that’s soaked in melancholy and speaks the language of heartbreak Daayre by Arijit Singh from the 2015 Bollywood film Dilwale. Composed by Pritam and written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, the song is a soft yet powerful ballad about emotional distance and the invisible walls that form between people who once loved each other. Sung by Arijit, the song captures that space between not being able to move on and not being able to go back. Its name, Daayre, which translates to “boundaries,” ties directly into the lyrical theme, the quiet pain of love that is still alive, but kept apart by the weight of the past.

In the film, the track underscores the emotional tension between the lead characters played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, as they wrestle with their history and try to make sense of what remains. The lyrics, like “Na marna munasib, jiya bhi na jaaye re”, lay bare the helplessness of wanting something that feels just out of reach.

Daayre – Guitar Lesson

The lesson on Daayre is taught by our expert Mike Walker. The song is in the key of G major, and while it doesn’t rely on complex structures, it uses a set of chords that give the track its soft, moody texture. You’ll be playing chords like G, Dmaj7, D6, D/F#, Em, A, C, and Bm7. Some of these might look unfamiliar at first glance, like Dmaj7 or D6, but Mike explains them in a way that makes them easy to understand. For instance, Dmaj7 is just a D major chord with the 7th scale note added, which adds a dreamy, floating feeling to the progression.

One thing that stands out in Daayre is its smooth voice leading. A good example is the shift from D to D/F#, where only the bass note changes. Mike shows how small changes in your hand positioning can help you glide through these transitions without breaking the flow of the song.

The rhythm pattern used is gentle and steady for a ballad. Mike encourages focusing on dynamics, playing softer or louder depending on the emotional highs and lows of each section. He also shares tips on how to highlight certain beats to bring out the melody hidden in the chords. The lesson wraps up with a full playthrough, and by that point, you’ll be able to join in comfortably, playing along with the emotions just as much as the notes.

FAQs

Q. What level of guitarist is Daayre suitable for?

Daayre works well for late beginner to intermediate players. If you’ve got a grip on basic open chords and can handle a few extended voicings like Dmaj7 or Bm7, you’ll enjoy this lesson.

Q. Do I need a capo for this version?

No capo is required for this lesson. It’s played in standard tuning using open and barre chords.

Tamanna – Introduction

Welcome to the guitar lesson on a timeless Punjabi classic song loved and celebrated all over India. Tammana by Prabh Gill is a song about falling in love, where the singer is expressing his desires. This song has been plucking the heartstrings of its listeners since 2012, and has collected more than 8M views on YouTube since, with comments like – “I love this song a lot, I have also sent it to my girlfriend” and “I am in love with this song.....with every word… {heart emoji}”.

This song is written in Punjabi and talks about love is a way that is transformative. In the chorus, the singer expresses his sole desire –the love should transform us in a way that we see god in each other. This is because the song is set in the traditional north indian culture where love has connotations of divinity and grandeur.

Tamanna Guitar Lesson

The guitar lesson on Tammana is brought by Mike Walker, wo explains all the guitar parts of the song, section by section. The initial sections talk about the chords and rhythm patterns of the song and in the sections that follow, the instructor goes on to explain the various guitar parts –chord voicings, solos, and fills that the song consists of.

The song is in the key of Bb Major, which means the way to play the chords of the song using standard shapes is by using a capo on the 1st fret. The chords of the song follow a minor key for the most part, and only in the chorus do they go to a more major sound. The tutor explains how to capture this movement well with the strumming pattern – D - UDUD - UDUD - DU (D is a downward strum and U is an upward strum.)

The special thing about this song is that it does not have drums in it, which means that all percussive effects are produced by the guitars and the bass. This leaves room for a lot of melodic motifs to fill the space left empty by the absence of drums. Hence, the song has multiple solos and melodic lines that sound beautiful.

Another special thing about this song is that it features a sitar solo near the end of the track, which, although it sounds difficult to play because of the signature picking technique, the instructor shows the way to play the sitar solo on a guitar in an easy way.
