B.Y.O.B. Guitar Lesson

The lesson on B.Y.O.B. is brought to you by our beloved instructor, Mike Walker, who demonstrates the song in its entirety and explains all parts of the song in great detail. Since this is a heavy metal song, there are a number of unconventional rhythmic patterns and fast melodic lines for the electric guitar, which is a signature sound for this genre of music.

The song is in the key of F major, but the tuning is half a step down; all the strings are tuned down a semitone. This, firstly, widens or brightens the tone, which makes it feel ‘heavy’ and secondly, loosens the strings, which makes it easier to play at a high tempo.

The lesson is easier to master as it only requires rhythmic proficiency to play in its entirety. The song is very drums and lyrics forward, as is with most heavy metal songs. The song is fun to play because of the distorted tone of the guitar. It’s a saturated machine-like sound that has low-frequency notes, which give it a slightly percussive vibe, usually called ‘djent’.

This is also a short lesson, taught easily by Mike, comfortably suited for beginners and advanced players alike.

Auliya – Introduction

Auliya is a deeply emotional song from the 2019 Bollywood film Hum Chaar, sung by Atif Aslam. The song blends traditional and modern musical styles, creating a calm and reflective mood that touches on themes of devotion and longing. The lyrics, written by Shabbir Ahmed, speak to a heartfelt yearning and spiritual connection, which Atif Aslam delivers with sincere emotion. This combination makes Auliya stand out as a beautiful ballad that resonates with many listeners.

The film Hum Chaar tells the story of four friends navigating their relationships and personal growth, and Auliya fits perfectly into this narrative as a soulful reflection of their emotional struggles. Composed by Vipin Patwa, the song’s melody and arrangement carry a softness that matches the film’s thoughtful tone. The song’s lyrical video, with its simple yet expressive visuals, has also helped it gain popularity, making it a memorable and meaningful part of the movie’s soundtrack.

Auliya – Guitar Lesson

Steve Luciano’s lesson on Auliya breaks down the guitar work in a way that’s approachable and easy to follow. The song features a variety of chords that create a rich and layered sound, starting with some basic shapes like Bm7, D, and E, then moving to more colorful ones like Bbmaj7 and Gb/Bb. These chords give the song a blend of warmth and depth, making it interesting to play and listen to.

The arrangement uses some chord variations that might sound complex at first, but Steve simplifies them by explaining how each chord relates to the song’s key and mood. For example, the Asus2 chord adds a gentle, open sound, while Bm/A and A/C# are examples of chords with bass notes that add smooth transitions and melodic movement in the progression. Steve highlights these to help players understand how small changes in chord shapes can make a big emotional impact.

Steve also focuses on rhythm and dynamics, showing how playing softly and with feeling can bring out the song’s introspective quality. The strumming pattern isn’t rushed; it lets the chords breathe, matching the slow, meditative pace of the song. For those interested in fingerpicking, Steve demonstrates how picking certain notes within the chords can add texture and emphasize the melody, giving beginners a chance to develop control and expression in their playing.

Overall, the lesson is designed to make the song accessible while still preserving its emotional depth. Whether you’re new to guitar or more experienced, Steve’s clear guidance helps you capture the spirit of Auliya, making it a rewarding song to learn and perform.

Game of Thrones Acoustic Version - Introduction

The acoustic version of the Game of Thrones theme song transforms the epic orchestral original into an intimate guitar arrangement. This version keeps the powerful melody while making it accessible for solo guitar players. The song comes from HBO's massively popular fantasy series that aired from 2011 to 2019.

Composer Ramin Djawadi created the iconic theme that became instantly recognizable worldwide. When the series premiered in 2011, the opening theme immediately captured viewers' attention with its distinctive rising string motif. The minor key tonality and driving rhythm perfectly evoke the show's atmosphere of political intrigue and medieval warfare. Many guitarists find this arrangement rewarding to learn as it combines technical challenge with immediate musical satisfaction.

Game of Thrones Acoustic Version Guitar Lesson

Taught by Mike Walker, this lesson breaks down the acoustic arrangement of the Game of Thrones theme. The song uses a capo on the 3rd fret and is played in the key of D minor. The main theme follows a repeating pattern of Dm, F, C, and Bb chords. These chords create the dark, medieval atmosphere of the original composition.

The right hand technique is crucial for this piece. Use a steady alternating bass pattern with your thumb while playing the melody notes with your fingers. The bass notes should land on beats 1 and 3, with the melody filling in the spaces between. This creates the driving rhythm that makes the theme so powerful.

For the melody sections, focus on clean fingerpicking with good articulation. The theme uses mostly notes from the D natural minor scale. Pay special attention to the syncopated rhythms that give the melody its distinctive character. The B section introduces some chromatic movement that adds tension before resolving back to the main theme.

Beginners should start by mastering the chord shapes and bass pattern slowly. The chord changes need to be smooth and precise. Intermediate players can work on bringing out the melody clearly while maintaining the bass rhythm. The piece sounds best when played with strong dynamics - louder in the dramatic sections and softer in the transitional passages.

Start slow (around 80 bpm) and gradually work up to the original tempo of 110 bpm.

Aces High - Introduction

Aces High" is the eleventh single by legendary British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, written by bassist Steve Harris for their 1984 album Powerslave. The song's lyrics vividly depict a British RAF pilot's experience during the Battle of Britain (1940), with the band's mascot Eddie appearing as a Spitfire pilot on the single artwork. The track has become one of Iron Maiden's most iconic songs, featured in numerous video games and extreme sports films.

The song's B-side contains a cover medley of Nektar's "Crying in the Dark" and "King of Twilight" from their 1972 album. The music video, filmed during the World Slavery Tour in Poland, incorporates authentic Battle of Britain newsreel footage. This powerful imagery became a staple of Iron Maiden's live shows, often paired with Winston Churchill's famous wartime speeches as an introduction.

Aces High Guitar Lesson

This lesson with Mike Walker teaches you how to play "Aces High" properly. The song keeps changing keys - it starts in C, then goes to A, then G, then back to C. This makes the song exciting but tricky to play. When the key changes, the mood of the song changes too, just like how a dogfight has calm moments and crazy moments.

The main riff uses something called harmonised guitars - that means two guitars play the same tune but at different pitches, making a cool twin sound. The rhythm is called "galloping" because it goes fast like a horse (down-down-up, down-down-up). You need to palm mute the strings near the bridge to get that tight, machine-gun sound Iron Maiden is famous for.

The solos use a special scale that sounds Middle Eastern. It's basically the minor scale but with the second note lowered (so in E minor, you play F natural instead of F#). This makes the solo sound tense and dramatic, which goes well for a war song. The fast parts need alternate picking - down-up-down-up - to play cleanly at high speed.

For beginners, start by learning just the power chords (C5, A5, G5) and the galloping rhythm slowly. The chords are simple, but switching between them fast is hard. Advanced players should work on the twin guitar harmonies and the quick key changes. The song is tough, but satisfying to play once you get it right, like most metal songs.

FAQs

Q. What tuning is used in Aces High?

The original recording uses Eb tuning (all strings tuned half-step down) but can be played in standard tuning.

Q. How to play the galloping rhythm?

Use alternate picking with emphasis on the downstrokes: Down-Down-Up pattern repeated.

Q. Is this song suitable for beginners?

The simplified power chord version is accessible, but the full arrangement requires intermediate skills.
