Elay Keechan is a song composed by A.R. Rahman for the Tamil film Kadal, which was released in 2013. This particular track from the movie's album stands out as the most listened-to song because of its energetic folk-rock fusion and catchy rhythm.

A.R. Rahman made sure to infuse folk elements with contemporary rock, making this song a truly refreshing listening experience. In this song you will witness acoustic guitar strums in addition to the bluesy bass lines and even the use of harmonica.

Strumming Pattern

Elay Keechan has a laid-back sound to it; it holds a nostalgic feel as well, which comes from gentle strumming or light fingerpicking. The recommended strumming pattern for this song is D – D U – U D U.

• D = Down Strum.
• U = Up Strum.
• “–” = Pause or hold

• When you play this song, try to use light dynamics; what this means is that you have to let the strums breathe in order to maintain the song's emotional depth.
• Furthermore, it would be great if you could use a capo on the 1st or 2nd fret to match up with the original pitch of the song.
• You can also use fingerpicking in the intro to add more layers of retro vibe to the song.

Tore Down - Introduction

Tore Down is a blues classic originally recorded by Freddie King in 1961 under the title "I'm Tore Down." Written by pianist Sonny Thompson, the song became one of King's biggest hits, reaching #5 on Billboard's R&B chart. The track showcases King's powerful voice and sharp guitar work, blending Texas blues with a raw, energetic delivery. Decades later, Eric Clapton covered the song for his 1994 blues album From the Cradle, staying true to King's original arrangement while adding his signature touch.

Clapton's version keeps the song's essential elements—the falsetto vocal phrases, punchy guitar fills, and that unmistakable blues shuffle. His recording was so well-received that it also reached #5, this time on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. Over the years, Clapton has performed "Tore Down" live many times, including at his Live in Hyde Park concert and John Mayall’s 70th Birthday show. The song’s enduring appeal lies in its raw emotion and tight groove, making it a favourite among blues guitarists.

Tore Down Guitar Lesson

Taught by Mike Dugan, this lesson breaks down Eric Clapton’s version of ‘Tore Down’, focusing on the blues shuffle rhythm, stop-time sections, and lead fills. The song is in the key of A major and follows a classic 12-bar blues structure, but with some clever variations. The most distinctive feature is the stop-time verses, where the band cuts out on the 1st beat, leaving space for Clapton’s vocals to drive the song forward. There are two types of stops—short stops (just a quick pause) and long stops (a full beat of silence).

The rhythm guitar part uses a Texas blues shuffle, played with a light swing feel. The basic pattern is A5-D5-A5-E5-D5-A5, but the magic is in the muting and dynamics. Use palm muting on the lower strings to keep it tight, and let the chords ring out slightly on the turnaround. Clapton’s version has a crisp, clean tone, so roll back your guitar’s tone knob a bit and use a tube amp with mild breakup.

For the lead fills, Clapton sticks mostly to the A minor pentatonic scale (A-C-D-E-G) but adds bluesy bends and quick hammer-ons for extra flavour. The opening riff is simple but effective—just a few well-placed notes with vibrato. The solo builds on Freddie King’s original licks but with Clapton’s smoother phrasing. Pay attention to his bending accuracy—he often bends up a whole step (from C to D) with perfect pitch control.

The stop-time sections require tight coordination with the band. When the band stops on the 1st beat, keep your strumming hand moving in time so you can jump back in smoothly. Beginners should practice the stops slowly, counting out loud (1-2-3-4-STOP) to internalise the rhythm. Advanced players can work on Clapton’s subtle variations, like adding a quick chromatic slide into a chord or throwing in a double-stop lick before a stop.

FAQs

Q. How do I play the Texas shuffle rhythm?

Use a down-up strum pattern with swing feel, muting the strings lightly between chords.

Q. What scale does Clapton use for solos?

Mostly A minor pentatonic, with some blues scale (added flat 5th) notes for extra grit.

Welcome to the guitar lesson for Dariya, the soft and emotional track from the 2016 film Baar Baar Dekho. Written, composed, and sung by Arko Pravo Mukherjee, this song has a personal and heartfelt tone that sets it apart from other romantic numbers in Bollywood. Arko’s voice, paired with a delicate acoustic arrangement, makes Dariya feel more like a quiet moment than a typical film song.

Lyrically, Dariya uses the image of a river as a way to talk about longing and resistance to change. The line “O dariya, mujhe nahi jaana uss paar” isn’t just romantic, it’s also about not wanting to move on or drift away from the person you love. That’s what gives the song its emotional weight. It’s not just about love, but about the fear of losing it. It resonated deeply with listeners when it came out, especially those who found something familiar in its stillness and simplicity.

Dariya Guitar Lesson

In this lesson, instructor Steve Luciano breaks down Dariya in a calm and clear way that matches the tone of the song. The track is played with a capo on the 1st fret, which raises the pitch slightly and gives the guitar a softer, warmer sound. The chords used in this version are very beginner-friendly and include G, Am7, C, Cadd9, Em7, and G/D. Steve walks through each one slowly, explaining the subtle differences between standard chords and their extended versions. For instance, Cadd9 is just a C chord with the added 9th note, which gives it a brighter, fuller feel. Em7 is like a regular Em but with a hint of openness that makes the transitions smoother.

The strumming pattern Steve demonstrates is meant to keep things simple and emotional. The rhythm follows the vocal phrasing more than a strict count, which makes it a great lesson for those learning how to “feel” a song rather than just play through the motions. He also gives tips on how to mute the strings slightly with your palm to make certain parts sound more intimate, especially during the verses.

What makes this lesson especially accessible is that even though the chords repeat often, Steve adds small details, like where to let a chord ring or when to use a hammer-on that make your playing feel closer to the original. He also talks about how to switch from open chords to chords like G/D smoothly, even if you’re new to them. And since this is a fingerstyle-friendly song, Steve shows a picking variation toward the end that you can use instead of strumming if you want to bring out the softer side of the track.

FAQs

Q. Can I play Dariya without a capo?

Yes, but it will sound lower in pitch than the original. Using a capo on the 1st fret brings the tone closer to the studio version and helps match Arko’s vocal range.

Q. Is this lesson suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. The chords are mostly open and easy to play. Even the extended chords like Cadd9 and Em7 are simple once Steve explains them.
