Perfect - Introduction

Welcome to the guitar lesson on a song that needs no introduction. Perfect by Ed Sheeran topped all the charts in 2017 and became a super duper hit worldwide. This song has now become part of mainstream pop youth culture. All lovers, depending on their heartbroken status, either love or hate this song. It has collected more than 4.9 billion views (almost half of humanity) on YouTube since its release and has been in all the romance playlists on every streaming service platform.

The song is a ballad celebrating the traditional marriage relationship between two lovers, written about Sheeran’s wife-to-be, Cherry Seaborn, whom he had known since he was in school and then reconnected with her when she was working in New York. Sheeran has said the song captures the feeling of finding "the one" - that magical moment when you realise you've met your soulmate.

Perfect Guitar Lesson

The guitar lesson on Perfect is an easy one. Nevertheless, the lesson has many sections that talk about the chords and rhythm of the song, and a section on improvisation where the instructor is demonstrating how to solo over the track.

The song only has four chords, namely – G - Em7 - Cadd9 - D, which the tutor explains is meant to be played with the capo on the 1st fret, as does Sheeran himself in live performances. The strumming of the song goes in triplets of 4, covering four bars of music.

The thing about minor 7th chords and augmented chords used in the song is that in the open position, they share some of the notes, and when chords share notes, the phenomenon of voice leading occurs. Voice leading is when the notes of one chord lead to another, creating an interesting movement between anticipation and resolution in the music.

Although the studio recording version of the song uses a capo on the first fret, the lesson here demonstrates both ways, with and without a capo, of playing the song in its entirety. The song follows a 12/8 time signature, and the rhythm sounds like that of a waltz, which makes it an easy song to dance to, especially with one’s lover.

The lesson makes available Perfect lyrics and chords along with the video lesson, which the advanced players can refer to when learning the song.

Welcome to the guitar lesson on the song that went viral on everyone’s feed, showing up in surreal landscape visuals – Gul by Anuv Jain. The song was also popular among the youth because of the artist’s other relatively more viral songs. It has received over 64 million views on YouTube since its release in 2021.

Gul in Urdu means flower. The song is about the flower that people keep and forget in their storybooks. It talks about how we dream about fairytales in the dusty and mystical books, which often don’t come true, and that that is okay. We’ll be okay because we have that spark within us – Jaadugari.

The line “toote makaan ek baar gir kar waise bante kahan hain”, which translates to broken houses are not rebuilt the same way, was a metaphorical motif that became insanely popular on social media.

Gul Guitar Lesson

The lesson on Gul is a comprehensive section-by-section tutorial of the song that goes over all the parts of the song – chords and rhythm, song arrangement, and full song demonstration. The tutor also explains how to play the song using a capo and also without the capo.

The song features and can be played using all the standard chord shapes like Am, Em, Fsus2, and C, but the unique thing about this song is the rhythm pattern that involves a picking pattern for playing the chords. There is also a way to play the song that involves a strumming pattern without applying the intensive picking technique. The strumming pattern goes something like D - D - U D U D U D - D U - (D is a downward strum and U is an upward strum.)

The song features an Fsus2 chord, which is a suspended chord. Suspended chords, as their name suggests, have a light tension to them that wants a release and a G major sound after an Fsus2 is a suitable resolution.

The song can also be played without the capo, as instructed by the tutor, which would then require you to play the barre chords, transposing the chords. The song has a 6/8 time signature, which can be counted as ‘1 and 2 and’.

FAQs

Q. Can Gul be played without a capo?

• Yes, but playing without a capo would require barre chords, which might be challenging for beginners. Using a capo on the 6th fret simplifies the chords to Am, Em, F, and G, making it more accessible.

Q. Why is Gul so popular among listeners?

• Gul stands out because of its relatable lyrics and minimalistic acoustic arrangement. Unlike mainstream pop tracks, it relies on Anuv Jain’s voice and gentle guitar melodies. The song’s themes of love, nostalgia, and heartbreak connect with a wide audience, especially those who appreciate indie and acoustic music.

Welcome to the guitar lesson on a heart-melting indie song called Alag Aasmaan. Written and performed by Anuv Jain, a master storyteller of the romantic variety who has a reputation for being celebrated all over the country by everyone who has or wants a broken heart.

Alag Aasman is about the suffering of lovers in a long-distance relationship. The artist says, “It is a rarity to meet each other in a long-distance relationship, and when you finally do, the goodbyes can get pretty difficult. There's so much uncertainty, and you do not know when you'll meet again”. Alag Aasmaan translates to ‘different sky’, signalling to the narrative that the lovers in different cities live under different skies.

The original version of the song was performed on a ukulele, recorded and uploaded on YouTube during the pandemic, the looming emotions of which complemented the sentiment of the song, that is about missing a loved one.

Alag Aasmaan Guitar Lesson

The instructor delivers the lesson in a section-by-section manner; the first section gives the introduction to the song, the second talks about chords and rhythm patterns, the third is about the arrangement, which is finally followed by a solo section.

Alag Aasmaan guitar chords are in the key of F# Major, but the open position sounds too bright for the subtle lightness of the song; hence, a capo at fret 6 is advised by the instructor to emphasise the soft twinkly quality of the sound on the higher frets. The capo here also transposes the chord shapes to the standard and more familiar ones – C, F, G, Am, and Em.

The rhythm of the song resembles that of a jazz classic, as made clear by the strumming pattern that goes like D - U - D D - U in a loop. (D is a downward strum, and U is an upward strum.)

The tutor explains how the song has four verses, a pre-bridge, a bridge, and an outro solo that constitute the arrangement of the track. At two moments in the song, the second and fourth verse, this arrangement offers a chord change to the major 6th interval of the scale –from G to Em (C# to A#m without capo) that lends itself to the tender and affectionate feel of the story that the song is telling. The outro solo is picked slowly in the style of bluegrass music and is played in the context of this major 6th tone on top of the same chords as verses two and four. The instructor shows the solo note by note, and since the original solo is only 30 seconds long, in the final section of the lesson, there is a demonstration on how to improvise over it for when you are jamming by yourself.
